Stokvels are one of South Africa's oldest financial ideas: a group of people who trust each other pool their money regularly and use it to reach a shared goal — and there's an estimated R50 billion sitting inside these community savings groups. StokFella built a digital platform around exactly that trust, and at the 2025 FNB App of the Year Awards, their Stokvel Marketplace won Best Financial Solution.

What actually won
To be precise: StokFella didn't win the overall FNB App of the Year (that went to Vula Medical, a referral platform for rural healthcare) — they won the Best Financial Solution category, specifically for their "Stokvel Marketplace." That's still a big deal. It means judges looked across South Africa's fintech field and picked a product built entirely around a community-trust financial model as one of the best.
Turning trust into a marketplace
StokFella has been digitising stokvel management since 2016 — secure transactions, records, and financial tools for groups that used to run entirely on a notebook and a shared bank account. The Marketplace goes a step further: it connects stokvels directly with sellers, bulk deals, and income-generating opportunities, so a group's pooled savings can turn into more than just a lump sum at year-end — it becomes buying power.

Why this is worth paying attention to
This is the same pattern we keep coming back to on this blog: South Africa's biggest financial opportunities aren't hidden in some new technology, they're already sitting inside community structures that have worked for generations — stokvels, spaza shops, informal trader networks. The fintech that wins isn't the one that replaces those structures. It's the one that gives them better tools without asking them to change what already works.
That's exactly the bet SparzaFi is making too — just from the marketplace-and-delivery side instead of the group-savings side. Different door, same house.
